The Tyranny of Things
The goal is to get to that place where the things of this world have no power over us
There is something called the tyranny of things. In other words, lifeless inanimate things have so much power over you so much so that they control you.
For instance, you can become so attached to your phone that a day without it feels like you are dead. You cannot imagine running out of power on it.
Your phone can literally call you out of an important duty just so you can check something so needless.
We experience this tyranny especially when we have new things. You just decide to drive your new car round the city for no reason. Your keep moving from place to place wasting fuel.
Remember how you wasted time on your new TV? It happens when we get new clothes, move to a new house or a new city. It is the story of the average man.
But the goal is to get to that place where the things of this world have no power over us; where smart phones, social media, gadgets, money, houses, cars and all the luxuries of this world no longer have a hold on us.
That place where the reason for our living is not motivated by the desire to get things or make ends meet. That place where things do not use us but we use things. That place where we longer pursue money but money pursues us. That place where we can say with Paul that we are no longer under the power of things.
