The rest-inducing effect of God's presence.
Those who skip spending quality time with God in prayer and the word will always have to deal with a worried and unsettled heart.
I have noticed a phenomenon; each time any of my twin boys is crying especially when they want to sleep, I will carry them in my hands then I will begin to pace the floor of the room praying.
They'll stop crying, start watching my lips and soon fall asleep!
This has happened almost every time. And I went on thinking that perhaps there is a rest-inducing effect in God's presence.
And it's true!
You cannot be someone who stays in His presence and be restless.
Restlessness is a symptom of truancy in God's presence. Those who skip spending quality time with God in prayer and the word will always have to deal with a worried and unsettled heart.
I have learned by experience that spending time with God may not bring immediate answers to my questions or prayers but my heart always rest.
Philippians 4:6-7 says,
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (NKJV).
Notice that there wasn’t a promise that you will have an immediate answer when you “let your requests be made known to God” but there is an assurance; “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus”.
The crisis may not go away but God's peace will become a shield over your heart such that the challenge has little or no impact on your mind. This guard over your heart will protect it against all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
You'll develop the fortitude to deal with the challenges. Instead of fear, you will become confident. People will wonder why you are so happy despite all you have to deal with. It is the rest-inducing power of God's presence that has stabilized your heart.
This is the sustenance promised in Psalm 55:22 when we cast our burdens on the Lord.
“Cast your burden on the LORD, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved” (NKJV).
These are challenging times and there is so much to deal with. There is pressure within and without. I will recommend to you that you find time to rest (sleep) in the arms of your everlasting Father in the same way my twin boys sleep in my arms.
The answer may not come immediately but your heart will rest.
“Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength” (Isaiah 30:15 NLT).
Return friend, and rest!
